Aboriginal Colouring Books
We are thankful to the Mamow Sha-way-gi-kay-win: North South Partnership for Children courtesy of Betty-Lou Scholey, who have donated 15 aboriginal colouring books. The books were designed by 2 native artists from the community of Sandy Lake First Nation; Bart Meekis (presently Chief) and Robert Kakegamic.
Excerpt from the book:
“Our Hope — At the outset of the 21st century, maintaining and rejuvenating First Nations culture is of paramount importance to First Nations people and their leaders. How to inform and educate First Nations youth about the need to keep their heritage alive is a major topic of discussion in many First nations communities…….We, the “Mingqun” First Nations Artists, are trying to preserve the knowledge, beauty and diversity of our culture through our paintings. We want to bring a deeper understanding and appreciation of the value of our Aboriginal artistic heritage to our own people and to our cultures and peoples around the world. It is our hope that this reviewed and expanded version of our first “Mingqun” colouring book will assist us in these endeavours.”

Strathroy Rocket Rally
This year’s Annual Strathroy & District Minor Hockey Association Rocket Rally is scheduled for Sunday January 20, 2013 from 1 – 3 p.m. at the Gemini Sportsplex. The Rocket Rally is an annual event where SDMHA partners with the Rocket’s Jr. B Association and Rally together to show case hockey in our community and raise money for a cause or charity. This year we are rallying to support Kevin Morton and his family and bring awareness to a cause that is near and dear to his heart.
Kevin and Lory have a five year old daughter, Elle, who has Rett Syndrome. This is a rare neurodevelopment condition that afflicts mainly females (1 in 10,000 births ) and is caused by a mutation in the X chromosome. Some never develop the ability to walk or even talk.
Kevin Morton is a former resident of Strathroy, a former Strathroy & District Minor Hockey Player, a former Strathroy Referee, and currently an OHA Referee. Kevin and his wife Lory (Goulart) now reside in Paris, Ontario. His parents, Jim and Lois Morton have volunteered for Strathroy & District Minor Hockey for many, many years.
Strathroy Minor Hockey, in conjunction with the Strathroy Referees Association is pleased to announce that this year’s Rocket Rally will benefit Ref4Rett. In past years, Minor Hockey players have played against the coaching staff in a series of benefit games. This year the players will play against a team of Strathroy Referees, in the hope of creating awareness and raising funds for Ref4Rett in honour of the Morton Family.
Come and join us on Rocket Rally Day Sunday January 20, from 1:00-3:00pm at the Gemini Sportsplex, Strathroy. See you at the rink!
Yours in Hockey
